KANGA

Kanga are textiles specific to the Swahili coast worn by Swahili people. These series of kanga are made from Belgian Linen and open a conversation between the two coasts of Africa, West and East. It is an exploration of the commemorative nature of the kanga fabric, often used as a celebratory textile, but also one of communication between the giver and the reciever.

These kanga speak to those that are capable of understanding and solidifies the use of opacity as a form of resistance against colonial 'knowing as power'. It celebrates the work of renowned and loved work by Malick Sidibe, who worked to show the elegance, exuberance, and resilience of the African through photography.
